I am a Professor at the Institute of Astrophysics, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Our group, Computational galaxy formation and evolution, is formed by young scientists and PhD students, working within strong collaboration networks. Our research focused on creatively questioning the physical processes that govern the formation and evolution of galaxies, which allow us to develop our own numerical modeling and simulations.

TEAM'S APPROACH AND TECHNIQUES

Our approach is driven by scientific questions, and the techniques that we use depend on the inquiry at hand. We resort to numerical simulations to understand the physical processes that shape our universe. The results of numerical simulations are confronted with observations with the two-fold goal of improving the models and making predictions which can be probed by observations. Astrophysics is immersed in an era of amazing observational facilities which will challenge our knowledge of the universe and numerical simulation of galaxy formation are a powerful tool to confront them.

RESEARCH AREAS

Chemical abundances are used as tracers of galaxy formation and the interaction of galaxies and the environment where they are located.

CHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES

Numerical models are constructed to describe the transformation of gas into stars, exploring the impact of different processes and the link to the properties of the interstellar medium. The connection between the local and high redshift universe is key to unveil the action of different physical mechanisms across time.

THE REGULATION OF THE STAR FORMATION IN GALAXIES

The history of formation of galaxies with different morphologies are analysed in detail in relation to their merger histories, environment, angular momentum context and fundamental relations as a function of redshift.

THE ASSEMBLY OF GALAXIES

Numerical simulations of the Milky Way analogues are performed and analysed to unveil the origin of our Galaxy. The unprecedented large and detailed observations of the Milky Way transforms it in a magnificent natural laboratory to explore galaxy formation.
